Speculation has been rife about the future of Divock Origi in recent weeks. Will he or won’t he leave Liverpool and go to Wolverhampton Wanders. If rumours are to be believed, Wolves could be set to make an offer for the latest Liverpool legend. After a failed attempt to sign the exciting player in last January’s transfer window, Wolves renewed their interest in the legendary squad player.
With news that Liverpool is attempting to bring in Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner – and the fact that his squad place sits behind Liverpool’s deadly trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and new arrival Takumi Minamino. You’d think that Origi would fear for his place in the current Liverpool team! But this is not the case, as he has made his name as a super sub at Liverpool.
Origi arrived on Merseyside in the 2015-16 season and managed to play thirty-four games for Liverpool. In the beginning, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was hesitant about making room for Origi with the squad. The manager was unsure about breaking up his holy trinity of Salah, Mane and Firmino. In the 2017-18 season, Origi went on loan to German side Wolfsburg and scored six goals in the German league. As time went on, Klopp found ways to utilize the talented player as he was able to play in a few different positions. He’s able to play wide on the left or as a central striker. Overall, he has made a bigger impact when coming off the bench – starting 66 times from off the bench.
During last season, Origi made his biggest impact coming off the bench to score important goals for The Reds at crucial moments. This included coming from 4-0 down to score two goals against Barcelona to send his team to the Champions League Final. And of course, scoring the second goal to wrap up the Champions League in the final and give Liverpool their sixth European title. He has also scored more goals than goals in Merseyside derbies than each of Liverpool’s first-choice front three. So far this season, he has only had the opportunity to play almost 410 minutes of football in a Liverpool shirt in the Premier League.
One thing that comes across about Divock Origi, is his relaxed approach to life and football. While most football players would be impatient with the lack of game time. Origi seems to take it all in his stride. Most of his teammates have taken notice of this trait. Liverpool midfielder James Milner talked about this quality in his 2019 book. ‘If we have a team meeting, most of us will be there well before. He is always the last to arrive – never late, or very rarely, but not more than 30 seconds before the meeting starts.’ He then goes on to describe the impact that the Belgium international has on the rest of the team. ‘How can I be stressed if this guy is just floating around on Planet Origi, super-chilled, smiling, leaving a trail of his possessions behind him.’
Who knows, this may be the reason why Liverpool have taken this season game by game and now sit at the summit of the Premier League. One thing is for sure, it appears that Divock Origi is going have another successful season with Liverpool if he turns down another offer from Wolves. If this is the case, it’s very hard to see him moving away from Liverpool in January.
